Advisory Committees of Council

The Township of Algonquin Highlands relies on engaged citizens to volunteer their time and knowledge by serving on its various advisory committees.  Advisory committees provide valuable input and recommendations to Council on a variety of areas in the community. Serving on a Committee is a way that you can make a difference in your community.

The Township recruits committee members with each new term of Council, and will fill any vacancies during the term.

Committees

Membership:

• A minimum of three members of the public who have a specific interest in airport activities as well as the promotion of the airport and its growth.
• Two members of Council and the Airport Coordinator.
• The Committee shall be appointed by the Council of the Township of Algonquin Highlands for the term of Council or until their successors have been appointed should any member resign his or her position.

• A quorum or members (fifty percent plus one) and at least one member of Council must be present before a meeting can proceed.

The purpose of the committee is to assist Council with the implementation of the Cultural Plan based on the Vision, Goals and Actions contained in the Plan. Timing for commencing actions will be directly linked to availability of funds and resources.

The Committee membership consist of the following:

  • Two members of Council
  • Township's Staff Person
  • And may consist of a minimum of Seven (7) members from the community with emphasis on representatives from the following groups:
    • Haliburton County Development Corporation
    • Haliburton County Public Library
    • Municipal Museum and Recreation Committees
    • Arts Council ~ Haliburton Highlands
    • Oxtongue Lake Community Centre Committee
    • Oxtongue Lake Arts and Culture
    • Youth Representative (16 - 30 years)
    • Other Cultural Groups

Note:  The Cultural Resources Committee is currently not meeting. The Cultural Plan Working Group has been formed to review the current Cultural Plan and make recommendations to Council.  Following the completion of the review of the Cultural Plan by the Working Group, a call for applications for membership on the Cultural Resources Committee will commence.  Meetings are held during the daytime and dates, times, and location to be determined.

The purpose of the Dorset Heritage Museum Committee is to promote and encourage the use of the museum by working with community members/volunteers, community organizations, and to showcase the area’s past with exhibits of; photographs, stories, artifacts and to preserve, and archive items.

The Committee membership will consist of the following:

  • A minimum of but not limited to 6 citizens from the community of Dorset
  • 2 Members of Council from the Township of Algonquin Highlands
  • 1 Member of Council from the Township of Lake of Bays

Meetings are generally held the last Tuesday of each month at 6:30 PM at the Dorset Heritage Museum.

Membership:

The Committee membership will consist of the following:

  • Two (2) Members of Council and the Township’s Environmental Manager
  • Minimum of three (3) members from the public with a personal commitment and interest in environmental protection and those representing environmental protection organizations from across Haliburton County. Preference will be given to a youth representative as a member of the committee and/or involvement in any Environmental & Stewardship Committee initiatives.

The purpose of the Committee is to actively participate in the recommendation, development and implementation of recreation programs and events at recreation facilities and outdoor spaces throughout the Township.

The Committee membership will consist of the following:

  • A minimum of but not limited to 4 members of the public, of which there is one person to represent Stanhope, one to represent Dorset and one to represent Oxtongue Lake;
  • 2 Councillors and the Recreation Coordinator from the Township of Algonquin Highlands;

Meeting date, time and location to be determined.

The purpose of the Committee is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Stanhope Township including neighbouring hamlets; from the period of the arrival of the first Native Peoples in this region until the present day; with special emphasis on the period from the first settlers to the present; by the receipt of donations, gifts and contributions from the public; by the collections of artifacts and other cultural objects; preserving them; and interpreting them to the public by means of a museum, educational programs, public events, displays and publications; and encourage others to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Stanhope Township; and to do everything worthwhile to carry out our purpose.

Meetings are generally on the third Monday (third Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) of each month at 9:00 AM at the Township Administration Office.
