The Hawk Lake Log Chute was originally built in 1861 and has been continuously repaired, extended and otherwise maintained ever since.
In 1999 municipal council supported a restoration project which ultimately took six years to complete, from 2000 to 2006.
The project received funds from a joint Federal and Provincial funding program, as well as significant cash and in-kind donations from an enthusiastic public.
The overall project included rebuilding the chute; and creating a park, a picnic area, washroom facilities, and an information pavillion.
A walking trail was developed as part of Algonquin Highlands trails system; and the 15-minute video below tells the story of the chute’s history and restoration.
