Algonquin Highlands Appoints New Chief Administrative Officer

With the retirement of longtime Township of Algonquin Highlands Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Angie Bird, the municipality will welcome her successor on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Ms. Bird’s municipal career spans more than 34 years, with the former Township of Stanhope and subsequently the amalgamated Township of Algonquin Highlands. She has served as CAO of the municipality for the past 16 years.

“Serving as your Chief Administrative Officer for the past 16 years has been the greatest honour of my professional journey,” she told members of Algonquin Highlands Council during her final meeting on Aug. 13. “We have navigated complex challenges, balanced competing priorities, and made difficult choices for the benefit of our community.”

Ms. Bird also recognized the municipality’s staff members.

“To our staff, over 34 years local government has evolved dramatically,” she said, “but one thing has remained constant – your unwavering dedication. You are the heartbeat of this community.”

John Connolly has been appointed the Township’s new CAO, most recently holding the same position for the Township of Marmora and Lake.

“I am excited to join Algonquin Highlands and become part of a community with such a strong history and sense of place,” Mr. Connolly said. “Following in the footsteps of a CAO who has dedicated 34 years to the organization is both a privilege and a responsibility, and I look forward to working with Council, staff and the community to build on that legacy and move the municipality forward.”

“We are delighted that John will be joining our team,” said Mayor Liz Danielsen. “Council collectively looks forward to working with him as we face the challenges ahead.”
