Statement Regarding Private Claims to Public Property on Maple Lake

The Township of Algonquin Highlands wishes to address ongoing events near a public access to Maple Lake along North Shore Road near its intersection with Dawson Road. This property has traditionally been used, for decades, for emergency access and ice fishing. A small group of area residents is making claims they own the property and have been expressing this to members of the public attempting to access the lake.

To be abundantly clear, the property in question is municipally owned. While there is a high degree of misinformation and disinformation being circulated in the community and on social media, no claims of private ownership have been substantiated through any credible documentation or otherwise.

The Township has issued No-Trespass Orders to the residents in question and will be taking the necessary steps to enforce such Orders. Further legal advice has been sought regarding next steps.

If members of the public feel harassed or threatened at any time while accessing this property, they are encouraged to contact the Haliburton Highlands OPP, who are aware of the ongoing issues.
